Science Made Sensible NSF GK-12 International Supplement
Last spring we were awarded an international supplement grant from NSF to expand our SMS program to South Africa. In July 2009, two SMS teachers, four SMS fellows, and the SMS program director spent three weeks in South Africa. They conducted both marine and terrestrial ecological research in collaboration with the University of Pretoria and the University of Cape Town. The team also spent a week working with middle school science teachers and students in the inner-city of Pretoria.
We are currently developing a competitive renewal application to be submitted January 30. Our goals are to build on our soil research project in Kruger National Park, pilot a large-scale marine research project examining fresh-water outflow, continue to work in the Pretoria middle schools, and deepen our collaboration with our South African colleagues. |
